Working my way through a to-do list

Back in April,  I read on Kelly's blog as she worked her way through the Money Saving Mom's 4 week plan for a clean and organized home.  The tasks were things like clean out your fridge and medicine cabinet and air vents and throw away/donate clutter as you find it.

I did many of the things on the list including cleaning all the windows, blinds, ceiling fans and light fixtures.
But I never did get around to cleaning the tops of the kitchen cabinets.

While Jeff was home and with lots of help from Gavin,  they took care of the cabinet tops for me.

I had a lot of stuff up there and man, was it greasy and dusty.
It is has all been washed but I don't think anything is going back up there for now.
Jeff is standing on a platform but my almost 6 foot husband is having to stand on his tiptoes to clean the tops of those cabinets.
The upper cabinets have crown molding around them and the shelf part is several inches below that.
So displaying things is tricky as they sit lower than the crown molding and there only about 10 inches between the crown molding and ceiling.

For now,  the cabinet tops are clean and empty.
I've looked around on Pinterest for ideas to decorate them but nothing strikes my fancy just yet.
Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Rhonda,
My cabinets are the same way. A pain to clean. I am working my way through my annual cleaning list too. Want to come and help me? Lol

  2. I don't have that type of cabinets in our current house, but did at our last one. When I got them clean the first time, I covered them with a layer of wax paper (you might need to tape down the ends if it tries to roll back up). Then when I got around to cleaning them again, I just pulled up the dusty, greasy, nasty paper and put down a fresh layer.

  3. My cabinets reach to the ceiling because I did not want that area to leave empty or decorate, such a useless space.
You could put a collection of vintage kitchen items up there like some of your bowls and cook ware or just leave it empty. That's what I would do if it was me, probably. Or just run a line of white lights there to turn on at night.
Thank you for praying for my daughter, she is doing better and I will be going home on Thursday!

  4. I had my cabinets built to go all the way to the ceiling for that very reason. I like the wax paper suggestion. I read of one lady who used Saran wrap on top. Jeff is a good man to clean it for you!

  5. Love that vacuum you have in your picture! I just bought one like it! We have finally moved and I have so much to do. I keep telling myself..."If you do stuff, stuff gets done" and little by little we are getting a lot accomplished. Your activity always inspires me.

  6. Lucky lady to have a hubby who is willing to vaume the high up places!! My cabnits go to the ceiling so I am of no help on how to decorate. I would think anything you put there would get pretty dusty as you are like me and really USE your kitchen!!

  7. I've always loved kitchens that had the space between the cabinets and ceilings due to the decorating possibilities - but I could see how it'd get so dirty up there, not to mention the dust and grease on the decorative items themselves! I could see a collection of pretty bowls up there, or teapots, or milk glass, or enamelware, or vintage tins.
