Moon Sand - fun but kind of a fail

We tried a moon sand recipe from Pinterest.
8 cups flour and 1 cup baby oil.
I made 2 batches and mixed-kneaded them in gallon bags until they looked combined.
I also added liquid food coloring with the oil but it just didn't show up.
The grandsons are having fun with it but it is messy. A change of clothes will be needed when we go inside.  I think only very neat children could play with it in the house.

It is lots of fun even if it quite messy.

Gavin tasted it and declared it "skusting" but I think he meant disgusting.

Next time, I want to try a version that uses corn starch and sand, no oil.
Have you made any play clays? Advice is welcomed.

My grands are really sweet but they are not neat.

  3. We loved making this back in the winter. The littles loved this. You're right--it's very messy. I took off their clothes and let them wear a paint tshirt while playing with it. I did allow it in the house but on an old blanket or vinyl tablecloth and with very close supervision! LOL

In the summer, I poured it into the sand table out on the deck; they enjoyed it but still wore only paint shirts to save their clothes!

  4. I'm glad to read about your experience. Looks like the boys had a good time with it!
A couple of years ago I picked up a little construction play set on clearance somewhere and it came with a small bag of moon sand. We just got it out last month and the boys loved it. We played with it outside on the front sidewalk. While it was a wonderful texture, it was so hard to clean up! There are still chunks of it stuck on the sidewalk, and we've had some significant rain since then! The recipe for homemade that I pinned is: 4 cups sand, 2 cups cornstarch, 1 cup water. I haven't made it yet, but maybe will give it a try while the weather is still good for playing outside. No way we'll have sand of any kind inside the house.

  5. Thank you for this post! I thought the point of moon sand was that it is easy to clean up? I've wanted to try this for awhile now so Im glad I know how it would really turn out. I've made play dough from flour and water and oil that is great and lasts long but i haven't been able to master a good sand recipe.

  6. Rinse them off with the hose, as my mom always threaten when we got down and dirty outside. LOL
At least they have fun...the best part.

  10. LOL boys love anything messy! : ) This reminds me of some home-made soap bubble thing I tried this summer with the grands. Pretty much of a fail :)
