this post is all out of order but the recipe is at the end......
a full recipe makes a lot - this bowl holds 13 cups and and it is all the way full. |
I've talked about Jo Ann York before. I read at least one magazine article about her
and remember seeing her on TV back in the late 70s.
http://healingwoman.blogspot.com/ left me a comment last week
and asked if I by chance had Jo Ann's cole slaw recipe.
Well, I did not but it got me thinking about Jo Ann again.
I've looked for this little paperbook book of hers for a while
but it usually is listed for a crazy high price.
When I looked last week, I found one
on Amazon for less than $8 so I bought it.
The seller got it to me so fast too.
Anyway, I tried the cole slaw recipe first.
I only had 1 pound of cabbage so I made just a half batch
and it is a great recipe, the kind of slaw we like.
It is not a heavy-dressed or super sweet slaw,
but is dressed just enough and the vegetables are just right.
We liked it so much, I made a half recipe on Thursday and then a full recipe today.
A little more about Jo Ann York,
this book was about how she fed her family of 4 for just
$16 a week, that translates to about $67 in 2011 dollars.
She has some great basic recipes and lots of money saving tips. I plan on cooking more of her recipes and will let you know how it goes. |
Looking forward to more of these recipes and more about the book. Always on the lookout for ways to keep grocery spending down!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a very interesting book. That $67 in Canadian prices would probably be about $100. Our grocery prices have always been higher than US prices. I would like to know what she does that keeps her grocery bill so low.
ReplyDeleteI probably spend about 100 to 125 a week for the two of us. And I bake almost all of our baked goods and buy almost no fast foods.
Interesting!
Hugs, cindy
Oooh...I want to try this! We love slaw and I make it this way except I've never added vinegar, onion or the salt and pepper. Just mayo, lemon juice and sugar for the dressing. I bet this recipe has a bit more zip to it! Sounds good with burgers or anything on the bbq, doesn't it? Mmmm.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteLooks yummy. I sure wish Dave could eat cole slaw.I had problems with blogger last week too.
Have a wonderful day.
Mrs. E
The slaw looks great!
ReplyDeleteI like this recipe. I am not a cole slaw fan but my family is! This looks like a good recipe. Will be making this slaw this week!
ReplyDeleteThat book sounds like a winner. The title really grabbed me! We've been eating well lately, with fresh veggies for sides. (too good, I'm afraid!)
ReplyDeleteI need to try this slaw recipe. My dh loves it.
I love cole slaw and you can now buy it here but it doesn't taste right if you know what I mean. I am going to try this...mind you it will be a half recipe as we would take too long to get through that much...lol.

Sometimes the best recipes are in the oldest books. I'll have to see if I can find this book in the library.
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks for visiting my blog. We did have some of the jam with dinner that night and it was really good.
Good article, thank you. I really like it!
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteThat coleslaw looks good! I was having problems with Blogger too, until Tammy L. suggested I start using Firefox as my browser instead of Explorer. It was really easy to download Firefox and voila - I can now post photos and comments on Blogger once again!
THANK YOU for posting this coleslaw recipe!!! My mother used to make this when I was a child and we all loved it. She found her book but this page is missing. My siblings will be thrilled when I bring this to our Memorial Day celebration.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much for finding this recipe!!! And sharing! My daughter found your blog and told me that you had printed the recipe. We both were looking for it for a long time and she thought SHE found it til she read that I had asked you for it!!! She will be making it for our Memorial Day celebration...thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI got this book as a wedding present in 1976. It was my "bible" for preparing food for my family during college and staying at home to have and raise babies. I was so glad to see you refer to "How I Feed my Family for $16 a Week."
