this beautiful crazy quilt was made by my mom for son Jimmy to congratulate him on his admission to the Bar.
My photography skills do not do it justice but here goes......
This quilt is made of old neckties - some belonged to relatives and others were thrifted.
all the blogs have lots of hand embroidery and other embellishments.
This block has Jimmy's law school's name and tower embroidered on it.
a dinosaur because young Jimmy planned to be a paleontologist.
this one has a section of a canary necktie that belonged to my dad.
My brother wore the same tie to work for an Ugly Tie contest and won first prize.
However, daughter Nina was very fond of this tie. One Sunday morning when she was about 2 years and too sick to go to church, my dad tied this canary tie around her neck and it made her very happy.
a button grape cluster because Jimmy worked at an Italian restaurant almost 10 years
frogs and peacocks
even some beading on this fancy crazy quilt
some machine embroidery on the block for Oklahoma State University
Mom used some of her sister's double knit scraps for the back and she pieced them together so pretty
Mom said this quilt was so much fun to make. She has even considered getting rid of all her other sewing and craft supplies so she could just make crazy quilts.
I don't expect she really will give up everything else but I do expect she will make more crazy quilts.
This is absolutely gorgeous!!! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! I can't imagine all the time that took to put together. That's nice to have things in it that bring back memories. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful! I love items made with the crazy quilt technique. Jimmy has such a great heirloom to pass along. Love the little extras. (grapes, tie and dinosauer)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love the crazy quilt. It reminds me of a purse I made out of different pieces of velvet when I was a 'hippy' teen. So kewl!
ReplyDeleteI save my daddy's ties when he passed away and made pillows for my mom and sister. I had some left over but not enough to make the kind of pillow I made them. I made a Dresden pattern. But, now that I've seen the crazy quilt I'm wondering if I could use my scraps of the neckties to make a crazy 'pillow'. :-)
That's an absolutely awesome quilt your mother made for your son!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful quilt and SO MUCH work went into it. So much thought too. Priceless! Congratulations to Jimmy for being admitted to the bar.

It's just a beautiful quilt and it's obvious how much work and love went into it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts. I love quilts that have sentimental materials used in them. It's clear where you get your talent!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful and important part of your families history. I am sure he will treasure it forever and hand it down.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad so many of your blog-friends had so many nice comments on your photo tribute to mom's latest quilt. Even for a lifetime master craftwoman-artist like her, this quilt is truly a masterpiece. I observed over a long stretch how she worked on it for a very long time to make everything perfect, and at a time in life when this kind of work takes more out of her than it once did.

Well, I already just love your mom and now I see what her talent for crazy quilting is...I think she is just the greatest! And to hear she is there now means you can read this to her and tell her a big hello from me.
ReplyDeleteWish her and your dad a very happy 60th anniversary! I wish them many more happy years ahead...
Hugs from Holland ~
