At the hospital.....

My husband had surgery this week, the second revision to his 3 year old artificial knee replacement.
The hospital stay, at a civilian hospital paid for by his employer provided insurance, was so nice.
I cannot say enough good things about it and we are just so thankful that it went so well.
This photo was less than 24 hours after surgery. He was already alert and happy.
He has taken very little pain medicine since because he says even though he has some discomfort from the surgery, his knee hurts less now than it has in 2 years.

He is feeling so good, we even went to church this morning. He was tired by the end of service but I am so happy he felt good enough to try.

Another happy surprise was the food at the hospital. We both could order anything we wanted off the room service menu. I was given complimentary meals for being his coach. It was so nice to eat in the room with him and not have to leave the hospital when I needed to eat.

The meals were really good too.

My breakfast tray one morning- fruit, oatmeal with little containers of cinnamon and brown sugar, bacon, blueberry muffin and hot chocolate.
Husbands tray- croissant sandwich with a cinnamon roll and fruit and orange juice.

After the second day, we ordered less. Even though it was a real treat and tasted so good, we knew we should not eat quite that much.

Our last night, we did not order. This fancy meal was provided by the physician- steaks with steamed veggies, rice pilaf, dinner salad and chocolate lemon cheesecake.
Who ever imagined a steak dinner in a hospital?

We are home now and a home health nurse came this afternoon  Some of the advice she gave was to eat extra protein to help speed up healing after surgery.  The protein doesn't have to come from meat but her advice made the steak dinner seem like an even better idea.

Thank you all who left comments and for the prayers. It meant so much to know others were thinking about us.
It is too early to know for sure, but we really think this surgery was a success!

  1. Glad that everything went so well, I have been the Hospital 9 times and never got a plate like that steak meal. I'll pray that things will continue healing. Blessings to you both.

    1. Hi Donna, I never wanted any food that Jeff has been served during previous hospital stays. But this hospital was just great.
Thanks so much for your prayers.

    1. Wow! Your husband is doing very well post surgery. Thanks be to God. the hospital stay sounds very good and the food provided looks excellent. I have a question. You mentioned your husband had knee surgery 3 years ago but now he is already having a 2nd one. Do you know why the 1st one didn't last the usual length of time? I always thought knee surgeries didn't need to be re-done for at least 10 years.

    2. Joyful, most joints should last 10-20 years. Jeff's joint has a plastic spacer piece that was loose and the wrong size. The current surgeon changed it out, it was a size 10 and the new one is a 10 1/2. He also tightened it and redid Jeff's knee cap.

    3. Thank you for replying. I'm sorry Jeff had to go through all that discomfort for so long. This next joint should last him well :-)

    1. Me too, Georgene, pain medicine is great if you have to have it but it sure can lead to problems. He took no pain meds last night, just an Aleeve in the afternoon.

  8. Even though I feel sorry for your husband having to have so many knee surgeries, especially in so little time, I'm glad he's feeling well and that the hospital stay at least provided some good food!

  9. Bless his heart! Maybe this will fix things for the long haul. My hubby's knee is now one year old and doing good, as far as I know. Hey, that food looks good!

  10. one Dr. told us 97% of TKRs are successful, not sure if that statistic is correct but I hope it it. So far, this second revision looks like it is good as gold.
and yes, that food was good- I am happy to be home but I do miss room service a little :)
