Crafting time with my favorite 4 year old

2 of my grandsons were here today. 4 year old Gavin brought 2 bags of pompoms that he got at his church, I think they must of been cleaning out some junk closets.
He wanted to do some crafts with his pompoms so we looked at Pinterest for some inspiration.
Gavin found a train engine he liked so we tried to copy it.
We also made letter shapes covered with pompoms.
The inspiration train was made with pompoms in just 3 colors and with pompoms all the same size.
Gavin wanted to use some of all his pompoms so his train is especially colorful and cheerful.  His train has soul.

Children just like to do make things- it gives them a big sense of accomplishment, especially if we grown ups don't interfere with too much assistance,

  1. Well done Gavin, well done. I especially like the spiky pom pom. I really like the letter shape idea....great to hang up as they are learning each letter.

  6. This is so cute!

I had my four year old over yesterday and we hit a milestone where he put a puzzle together all on his own and enjoyed doing it without asking for help. Four years old is a great age :)

  8. I think most of us can remember back when even the most simple crafty thing was fun. My children use to make all sorts of things and one of the simplest was a Christmas ornament made with Elmer's Glue, some yarn scraps and some odd craft items. They drew a tree on wax paper with the glue and then placed the yarn on the drawn tree. They added sequins and beads, sometimes glitter. When it dried the wax paper was removed and a hanging hook was applied. I have a couple of these silly little ornaments and when the tree goes up so do the little trees. I think doing this sort of thing gives confidence too, and teaches them how to be giving. The pom poms would be fun, heck I would like to play around with that too. A shoe box can be filled with all sorts of scraps, buttons, beads, yarn, glitter, sequins, the pom poms, Popsicle sticks, etc. many things found around the house, or at the Dollar Store, or the reduced item bin in most stores. On a rainy day hand them the box and let them do whatever their imagination desires. I see a lot of fun, children see and remember the memories. How priceless is that!

  12. Gavin's train is very sweet, he is very creative! I love to see what my grandkids will do when I give them a chance to just be creative. I have a couple of paintings that I cherish that my now 12 year old gd made a few years back.
