I first heard of I Spy quilts maybe 10-12 years ago, way before I had any grandchildren.
Then once she got home, she has never stopped growing and thriving.
Each block of an I spy quilt uses novelty fabric and the fabric gets fussy cut so the design is featured in each block.
The template I used is a 3 3/8 inch plexiglass square, which is small. If I was starting another I Spy quilt from scratch, I would use a 4 or 5 inch square. Some of the fabrics I would of liked to use had designs that were just too big.
Anyway, I've been collecting novelty fabrics all this time and I thought there were finally enough to finish cutting out squares and sew up a quilt.
Every square is something different.
This one is for granddaughter Andie who will be 2 very soon.
It is all machine sewn and quilted. The backing has fish and mermaids riding dolphins.
Little Andie was born early at 5 pounds and took a helicopter ride to a bigger hospital on her first day of life. She spent a few days in the children's hospital.

No one would ever guess our tall almost 2 year old Andie was a Premmie.
Some of my next quilts will be more I Spy quilts for Andie's cousins, JJ and Braeden.

DeleteAndie is a cutie! Love her outfit. Cute quilt. Love the backing too. Jaymee did a I Spy quilt for Ryan for Christmas one year. A queen size and we were looking at all materials for a square to use.

I have been reading your blog for several months but had trouble commenting until I set up my own blog. I bought two things entirely on your recommendation: the Wet Brush and after Christmas I found the popcorn air popper at CVS. Love them both! You have a lot of good ideas.

DeleteI have made I Spy quilts, using hexagons, with two of each print. These can be used to play games with a child by "spying" a certain thing or matching two alike. Fun little quilts!

I've been collecting fabric to make some for my grands, but will do with larger squares. It needs to be a quick project or I lose interest. LOL.
No, I never made I Spy's for Gavin and Elizabeth. They will just have to help their younger siblings enjoy theirs. :)

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl, I used to sit on my grandmother's bed with her and point to different pieces of her quilt and ask where each one came from and listen to her stories of the different garments she made for each of her children from flour sacks, or the fabric she bought at the general store for special occasions. I loved that tired old quilt and leaning into her arms and listening to her gentle voice telling stories about my dad and his childhood. I think that led to my fascination with I Spy quilts to this day.

ReplyDeleteThe quilt turned out really cute. I have a friend who has made about 50 I spy quilts, a little differently, and with 6" squares. They are fun, and I have made a couple. Her granddaughter loved hers so much, she has worn it out twice! She made me one, and when I was still living with my kids, everyone always wanted the I spy quilt while watching tv.
