Weekend cooking

Our weather is so changing.  We had snow at the first of this week, then some warm sunshiny days and today has been cold and rainy.
Today was a good day to do some baking.
I tried a new to me cookie recipe,  for those famous New York City Black and Whites. I've never been to NYC and have no plans to go so I figured I should just bake some myself.
I baked them exactly as the recipe was written,  I used my large Pampered Chef scoop and ended up with 10 big cookies.
They are really good,  the cookie is soft like cake but is still sturdy enough to eat with your hand like a regular cookie.  We liked them a lot and I will make them again but will probably make them smaller.  They really do taste like something from a fancy bakery but they are easy to make with basic kitchen ingredients.
Have any of you had a real Black and White cookie in New York City? I am wondering how much they sell for there. I estimate the ingredients in my recipe cost about $1.50 for all 10 big cookies.

I used the bread machine to mix up the dough for our everyday sandwich buns
one of my goals for 2014 is to make all our bread and so far, I have.  It tastes better and cost so much less.
Then I mixed up a second batch of dough but increased the sugar to 1/2 cup and added chopped raisins and pecans.  When the dough had risen, I rolled it out like cinnamon rolls and spread it with soft butter and cinnamon sugar. It was enough dough to make a standard size loaf and a small loaf of cinnamon raisin bread.

my husband is shelling more pecans, on the thirds.  From this current batch,  he has cleaned 8 gallons.

I guess I should be looking for more pecan recipes  :)

what are you baking?

  1. In our area of upstate ny we call those cookies Half Moons...we have several bakeries that make them. Some vanilla bottom or chocolate bottoms and some bakeries will change up the frosting for the holidays. Right now we are seeing green for St Paddy's day. They are quite tasty...maybe a bit too tasty and sell very well :-)

  3. Those cookies look awesome! I used to live in NYC, and now live about an hour from there in NJ. My little brother always makes me bring him a b&w cookie when I go home to VA. The cost? $4 per cookie. You are definitely making out like a bandit with that recipe. I think he might get a homemade one next time! ;)

    1. Thank you for telling me this. I was guessing they sold for $3-4 in NYC.
Yes, you should try this recipe. It was simple and a lot of good cookies for not much effort.

  4. I make those black and whites. I'm SURE if you bought one in a NYC bakery, they would be more than $1.50 EACH. haha. They are really yummy, though and look and taste like something special.

I baked chocolate chip cookies this week. There's only one left. ha.

  5. It is amazing how many pecans you all have had this year! Your husband's friend must have quite the crop! Nuts are so expensive to buy. I want to make the black/white cookies, too. Good job making all your bread this year. The cinnamon raisin loaf looks delicious.

  6. Rhonda, the black and white cookies are delicious. I do prefer the smaller size. Like you I have never eaten an authentic one from New York City, but for the cost of one cookie I will stick with the homemade version!

  8. I am planning to take the plunge and make my first hamburger buns this afternoon. I have my homemade bagels recipe like I want it and it is time to move on and learn something new. We used to pay 55 cents each for bagels and now I make a dozen for about 90 cents. It is also time to restock the cupcake container in the freezer. As empty nesters we find this to be the perfect way to have a small dessert on hand. They keep very well and we cannot tell a difference from fresh even 6 weeks after they go into the freezer.

    1. Freezer cupcakes are a great idea, one of our grandsons thinks cake is the best food ever.

  9. Your cookies and bread look so good! I am envious of your pecan haul...I love pecans and they are SO expensive here. Do you have pecan trees or are you buying these in bulk somewhere?

  10. Hi Melanie, he has a coworker with a pecan orchard-small business. He does the shelling for them and keeps a third.

  11. Have you considered making candied pecans? My Mom makes them and they are delicious. Hers are made with an egg white and a spiced sugar mixture and then baked. Great for snacking or salads.

  13. My daughter and I made the black and white cookies this weekend. They were so good. Thanks for the recipe. I have never been to NYC, but I would love to go someday.
