First day of Twenty Fifteen

Happy New Year to everyone! 
This little statue was bought years ago at a thrift store. 
He was handmade by someone who left his legs bare. In the front, he is fine. But his backside, well, my children all giggle about it.  So I just keep his back turned where it doesn't show. 
A southern tradition we follow is eating black eyed peas and cabbage on January 1. I'll cook the peas with a little diced onion and ham and we will eat them on top of a bed of rice. 
The cabbage gets sautéed in a little butter with some onion just until tender, then seasoned with salt and pepper and a tiny sprinkle of sugar.  Sugar on vegetables is Southern too but not something I do except for this cabbage dish.
Dessert will be a cherry pie- it's not traditional to New Years but my husband has been wanting one. 
Apparently I am a rusty pie baker as I didn't cut the vent holes nearly big enough. 
Yes, there is a big mess in the bottom of the oven where the pie bubbled over. 
Thankfully we have a self cleaning oven and I will run than cycle later. 
I used canned tart cherries - the label says they are healthy (healthy before they get cooked in sugar and a crust anyway)  and 
I used the recipe on the back of the can.

  1. My families tradition is northern pork and sauerkraut and my husband's southern family did black eyed peas and collards, which he does not even like! I haven't done New Year's cooking for several years and will not today as we have leftovers that need eating. Have you tried cooking your cabbage in bacon grease-SO good.

  2. Here in Ga we have already had our meal of collards, black-eyed peas, cornbread, and pork (chops today). Yum! Wish I had a piece of that pie ala mode- my favorite pie! Happy New Year to you Rhonda. Angela

  3. We are in New Orleans for a few days ns had to actively seek out a restaurant serving our traditional meal. Fortunately we found The Little Gem which was hosting a Local Food event. Delicious slow roasted pork, collard greens, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas and cornbread was the menu. We are feeling very happy, but have our fingers crossed for a Sugar Bowl success in an hour.

  4. Your pie looks delicious! Yum!

    I always have things boil over in the oven. I keep a sheet of foil on the bottom of the oven and just throw it away when it gets dirty. Maybe it's a tip you'd enjoy as much as I do. :)

  6. Your pie really looks yummy even if it boiled over--it's the homemade look.;-)

    I don't remember a New Year's tradition for my family but my mother-in-law makes lasagna for New Year's so we have adopted that tradition. This year, we invited friends over for New Year's Eve and had a white elephant gift exchange and served lasagna for dinner. So today we ate leftovers and recuperated from the late night and all the activity and traveling from the last two weeks!

  7. Maybe cherries weep out more or at least more noticeably than other fruit pies so that's why it's traditional use the lattice work top more than any other pie. I never thought of that before. Anyway, I'd love a cherry pie, too. Maybe I'll get this can and see if I can make one. I love all your meal ideas for the day. I learned a few years ago that if you put in a dash or two of dill just before the cabbage is finished (and cooked with butter and salt), it is delicious. My MIL puts sugar in corn. Sugar. In. Corn. It's a wonder all my in-laws don't have diabetes. Sugar in turnips and cabbage - now that makes sense. Cute little New Year's statue. You have such a fun home and I'm grateful for you sharing your days with us to help us all smile.

  9. Mmmmm. Cherry pie. Yours is the second reference to that variety of pie I've heard in the past week. Maybe somebody's trying to tell me something! I've been making pecan pies during the holiday season. Time for something different.

  10. We have black eye peas, collards, ham and cornbread. This year, I did a venison roast instead of ham.

  11. We eat the same thing! Black Eyed Peas, Cabbage and cornbread.
    So yummie!
    My husband loves pie... says he has 2 kinds that are his favorite. Hot pie and Cold pie... ;)
