We have friends who have a small pecan grove. They told us the trees were loaded this year and they are expecting a bumper harvest.
They let their friends and church family pick up pecans "on the halves." Meaning, we can pick up all the pecans we want and we give them half of what we harvest. Then they sell the pecans we help harvest to people who don't want to pick up their own.
Their grove is in a peaceful part of the country and the picking is relaxed and pleasant.

My husband weighed ours on the bathroom scales when we got home and we think we got about 30 pounds. Of course they won't yield that much once my husband cracks and picks them out but it will yield lots.
We do plan to go back and harvest as many as we can.
30 pounds of pecans is not bad at all for our 2 or so hours of work.
My husband will have plenty of time to pick up more pecans and to crack and shell them as he just retired! And we are very happy about that too.
How wonderful! They are very expensive here. Also a lot of things you can do with them. What a blessing! xxx
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful blessing, Annabel. We like pecans in banana bread and pecan pie and they are wonderful just to eat plain- either raw or roasted and salted.

DeleteWell good for Jeff! I know you're both looking forward to the 'new' phase of life and now he'll get to spend more time with the littles while they are little, too. Totally jealous over the pecans. I was just reading that I'd picked up over 200 pounds from out little tree in the back yard a few years ago. Not one, and I mean not ONE, on the tree this year. I plan to scout a litle and see if any of the trees I can reach on our place has any. I'm afraid so much of our land has grown up that I'll not be able to get those few that do have nuts.
ReplyDeleteTerri, I remember the year you got the very bountiful harvest. Pecans are funny- some years you get them and some years you don't. Oklahoma had a lot of rain this year and I guess that is what helped them grow so much.

What a blessing! Pecans, and nuts in general, can be expensive. The least expensive I have found are close to $7 lb for halves at Sams. Congrats on hubbys retirement! We have a long way to go, but I am ready to spend my days with Chuck. Enjoy your time together!

DeleteCongratulations to Jeff on his retirement! I am hoping for sunny weather so that I can pick up pecans from our trees this coming week. I will most likely keep some and sell the others to go into the new house fund. I am impressed with Jeff cracking them himself. That is one of the few things I gladly pay to have done.

What a good deal! Our tree had a bumper crop two years ago, not many last year or this year. This must be normal for pecan crops. I've just let the crows have a go at them this year since I have so many left in the freezer from two years ago.
