Homemade puppy toys

We've had our new puppy almost 2 weeks.  She is sweet and doing fine, but getting a puppy and all the gear we needed has not been very frugal.  She needed a crate, a collar and leash, dog food and chew toys and her adoption fee.

She is very playful and also  needed some toys to help entertain her.
I looked on Pinterest and saw many homemade dog toys.  I used long strips of fleece to make these because it's what I had on hand.  There are many similar tutorials using discarded t shirts.
Mabel has had lots of fun playing with these.
If you want to make some,  just search for DIY dog toys on Pinterest.

The grandchildren like playing tug of war with Mabel using the new toys.

I don't recommend these fabric toys for every dog.  Our son once had a Staffordshire Terrier named Angel who would eat anything.  Angel once ate a whole sock and needed an expensive surgery to remove it from her belly.  These toys would never of been safe for her.
Mabel just plays with these, so far.  And we will be keeping an eye on her.

  1. She is so cute! I know that getting a new animal can be so expensive! Love the toys you made for her. Our new cat has been very expensive too and has just about torn up the toys we bought for him at the dollar store. I look into making some for him. Have a great day Rhonda.

  2. Mabel is so cute! What kind of dog is she? A lady at our Farmers Market sold dog toys similar to these. We've been looking into getting another dog and we are reminded of how expensive Rock's first year was! (Although pretty frugal after that!)Fortunately, most shelter fees include basic shots and spay/neuter. And the fee is much lower than paying for all of those services out of pocket like we did for Rock since we got him for free from a friend. So we are looking at going that route. Rock was part Staffordshire terrier and he destroyed all cheap toys when he was a puppy so we refused to spend more money on those! His favorite toys turned out to be ropes (tug of war) and the Kong Extremes (free from Freecycle and 10 cents at a yard sale). Those all lasted a long time!

    1. Hi Mary Ann, the shelter said Mabel is half boxer and half bloodhound but I'm not so sure. We can see some boxer traits but nothing resembling bloodhound. She is growing but we don't know how big she will be, she does not have big paws like big dogs usually do as puppies.
I know some dogs like squeaker toys but our Theo didn't. When he got one, he thought his job was to rip it open and remove the squeaker and then he was done with it. 😂

    2. I noticed that about her paws too! It'll be interesting to see what she looks like as she grows and how big she'll get. She is just adorable!

    3. Mary Ann, I'll keep you updated on her growth. She is growing but it's a mystery as to how big she will end up.

  4. Our granddog Ray will eat anything. He once ate a pincushion, pins and all. Expensive surgery for him, too.

    1. A pincushion? Wow, that had to hurt in so many ways.
