Cooking, tackling a job and some sewing

This post is far from perfect - I did it on the iPad with the blogger app that has a mind of it's own 😫

hello everyone
Yesterday, I spent about an hour cooking 2 dishes that will feed us several times.
I made a batch of cheeseburger soup where I loosely followed 2 recipes.
The other was a batch of Dirt E Rice, which is a Trim Healthy Mama diet recipe, and we just like the way it tastes.
I used  a pound and half package of lean ground beef and divided it for the 2 recipes.  They both use basic ingredients,  what you see in the photo as well as bell pepper and sage in the rice dish, and milk and cheese in the soup.

I know some people turn up there noses  at leftovers but we really like have homemade food that we can reheat and enjoy at our convenience.

Wendi at My Heart Is Always Home has  been doing some Tackle It Tuesday projects where she cleans and organizes small areas in her home.  Earlier this week I straightened up our extra pantry.
Today I worked on our silver ware drawer.

Before and it is just crazy how many crumbs were hiding in there 😱

After - yes we have lots of silverware - and it gets used when we have a big family gathering.  I happily use paper plates then but we all prefer real flatware.

I also worked on making 3 reversible fleece blankets from the Joann remnants.

They were quick to sew up and I'll show the finished blankets tomorrow.  Right now they are in the washer,

Our big table was a nice surface to spread out the fabrics and trim them.
See the plastic sack? My sewing tip is to keep a sack handy for corralling all the unusable scraps as you work and then just throw it all away

  1. Rhonda I love that little tree all decorated with hearts. Valentines Day is not a big thing here in my part of the world. Hubby and I have never exchanged gifts nor have we celebrated the day in any special way. I do however love that little tree.
We are big eaters of leftovers. It's just too hot to be cooking everyday. We may have a roast and then this is followed by a couple of days of cold meat and salad. If there are roast veges leftover they will be cooked up in a Frittata. This will be eaten hot and then on following days eaten cold with cold meat. We eat a lot of leftovers here.

    1. Good morning Jane, thank you for the compliments on our tree, we like the decorations and we really enjoy the twinkle lights on the short days, long nights of winter.
I like eating leftovers as there is a lot less clean up compared to cooking a new meal every day. I don't hate doing dishes, but if I can avoid it, I certainly do πŸ˜„

  2. We have a big table, too. 44x96. Love it for games, homeschool, big meals (with only 3 of us though, this happens rarely). Your recipes sound wonderful, and we love leftovers, too!

    1. Hi Tammy - our tables are almost twins in measurements.

  3. I am a big fan of leftover, and fortunately so is my husband. I usually serve them the next day. I often make single serving frozen dinners if only a little is left over.

  4. I love leftovers too. Some things such as spaghetti and lasagna even taste better the second day. Cute little Valentine tree. I need to do more for the holiday.

    1. Hi Jane, my family says chili and beef stew are better the second day.
And one goofy son says cold leftover pizza is the best way to eat it

  6. We hardly ever throw any food away. I like to have enough left from a noon meal for supper at least. I have a drawer in the kitchen FILLED with things I use all the time, but have to hunt for the item I want at the time. Your fleece looks warm and cozy.

    1. I'm glad you commented. I'd somehow lost track of your blog but now I have it back ❤

  7. I wanted to thank you again for the instructions on how to cook the carrots in the oven. So easy and very good. Would you mind posting the soup recipe, I had some at a restaurant recently and can't find one I would like without potatoes. The one I ate had pickles in it, liked the flavor lot. Cheryl

    1. Hi Cheryl, I'm so glad you like the carrots.
I'll post my soup recipe next but it has potatoes and doesn't have pickles, it may not be what you like.

  8. You're a busy woman! I like to cook extra too. At the very least I like to have leftovers available for lunch; that keeps me from eating whatever garbage I happen to find instead. :) I prefer real flatware as well. Plastic just doesn't do the job.

    1. About plastic, I don't mind a plastic spoon for ice cream but to eat real food like salad and grilled meat, things we serve often, plastic just doesn't work.

  9. Do you have links to your two recipes? They both sound good. We love leftovers, especially when it's soup! It tastes even better the next day. And my hubby takes his lunch and dinner every day to work (he works a 12-hour shift, so he has to pack a lot of food), so leftovers are perfect. Your fleece blankets will be so nice to have around the house, especially with the grandkids.

  10. I also love your tree! I'm working on putting my Valentine dΓ©cor up. I do have my wreath on the front door and the flag on the holder.

I also love the blankets. I had planned to make myself a winter driving poncho from fleece (it's so cozy) in January, but the I got really sick. Maybe I'll have one going into next winter.

Don't you feel so accomplished?! I love that feeling!

    1. Thank you Debby, I have had a productive week and it's a lot because I had no children here. Some have been sick but are on the mend. I hope you are all better too.
Yes, this fleece is cozy. These double sided blankets will be quite warm.

  11. We seem to be on similar paths about the small tidy/decluttering projects. Since I seldom have time for big projects I thought smaller, shorter activities would help.Starting in my kitchen where so much needs to go and new ways of display need to be implemented.

I do like the fleecy blanket and the idea for keeping plastic bag on the chair and should implement it as I often just let scraps fall all over and have a lot on the carpet to clean afterward. Did you use fleecy backing (or satin like I've seen in some stores)on the pink blanket or is that just a plain colour of the same fleece with pattern on the other side.

I'm with you on paper plates and real cutlery for large gatherings. It saves time and energy on plate washing but no one likes to eat with flimsy plastic forks that don't pick up any food.
