First grocery shop in January

We ventured to Aldi this morning as we had 1 egg and no bread left, and no fresh fruit except grapefruit.
So, in keeping with my plan of a pantry clean out,  below is what I bought.

 I spent $17.
The only thing I bought that wasn’t on my list was the dinner napkins that were on clearance for .99
I might of bought 6 packs if I wasn’t on this plan.  We use cloth napkins except when company is here,  so 100 napkins will last a long time anyway.
Aldi still had quite a bit of Christmas clearance but the napkins were all I even thought about buying.

I hadn’t checked the grocery ad so I was happy to see grapes, oranges and apples were all on special this week.

It’s still close to first of our pay cycle but putting together meals has been easy so far.
I’m hoping it stays that way but time will tell.

From the comments on my post 2 days ago,  lots of us are doing a pantry use it up this month.
‘‘Tis the season for pantry challenges,  I see.
The more, the merrier!

  1. My hope is to only purchase milk and fresh fruit for the rest of the month. I didn't look at the grocery ads when they came today. I put them straight into the recycle bin.

    1. I hadn’t checked them either - what’s the point when I’m not going to shop them anyway, right?

  2. Very nice first shop! You have me craving a grapefruit so the next time I shop, I am getting just one for me. Hubby can't have it.

  3. I'm also doing my annual pantry challenge this month. My goal is to spend less than $100 on produce and perishables this month. We have a good amount on hand already. I went to Aldi on Wednesday and the store (especially produce and dairy) was so picked over and bare. It was good I did not need much! I'm guessing the truck came on a different schedule with the holiday because it's usually well-stocked.

  4. Oh, I love Aldi! The bulk of my grocery shopping comes from there, and I fill in the gaps with other local grocery stores. I'm lucky enough to live in a place with quite a few grocery stores that are in fierce competition with each other, and so there are always really great sales going on somewhere. Which is why I'm planning on eating down the pantry and freezer this month as well, I'm all stocked up! :) I'll fill in the gaps with fresh food and dairy, but it's definitely time to do some clearing out. :)

  5. I so wish we had an aldi here. But 2.29 for eggs? Robbery I tell you. I too am on the pantry clean out duty. We bought milk, fresh veggies and fruit. Everything else from pantry.

  6. I am already down 23 bucks and bought very little, but I was completely out of olive oil and I use it every single day. I am hoping to make it until at least next Wednesday before going to the store again.

  7. I wish we had an Aldi closer than 60 miles away, but I go when I can. We're coming up on Bountiful Baskets this coming week, and I may order the basic box. We haven't gotten one in quite some time, but it lasts us awhile when we do, and is probably the same $$ or cheaper than going to Aldi. The big difference is that we plan around what we get rather than getting what we planned.
So far I've only spent a couple of dollars on a package of romaine lettuce. We're hungry for salads.

  9. I can't believe the good prices there. You pay $2.19 for a gallon of milk while I pay $2.89 for a quarter of a gallon. A dozen eggs here are not less than $2.79 and more likely to be over $4.00 and that is for regular eggs not what they call organic. It seems we pay so much more here. I drool at the prices you pay but also over in England where I know they also pay a lot less...at least in some places. Continued success with your pantry clear out.

  10. I am off to Aldi this week too! My mission is to use things up that need using and rotating. Like Joyful I am amazed at the prices. A doz eggs here are $5 to $8. Not sure where Joyful is located. I am in Australia for anyone reading and wondering.

  11. I ran to the store today and spent $27 paying with a gift card. I got GF pizza crusts for my youngest daughter, milk, sour cream and a few items that were on great sales.

  13. What do you think of Aldi's chocolate? I like it, but it has a pretty distinct flavor.

    1. Hi, I like Aldi chocolate. But I’m no chocolate gourmet at all. I prefer their milk chocolate with almonds just for eating.
I have had good success with their baking chips. I think they are equal to Nestle Toll House.

  14. Love those blue cooking pots! I had to have my Rhonda fix. I've been so busy with that YouTube channel I have neglected just time blogging and reading all the blogs I love. Have you read Strangersandpilgrimsonearth.blogspot.com? You would love it if you aren't already on there. Anyway, I don't get replies from this old blog but when I get on Blogspot it only connects to this. I know that doesn't make sense. Just know that if you reply to me on here I won't get it. I just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm on here having fun.:)
