February 27- cookies and books

Hello again
I bought a bag of black walnuts at Sprouts awhile back and I used them today to make these cookies.
I got the recipe from my uncle Rex but I’m pretty sure he got it from his mom,  my grandma.
I made them exactly like the recipe except I used vanilla instead of black walnut flavoring.

I kept about dozen for us and shared the rest with our son and my parents.

Black walnuts don’t seem to be too popular now but I grew up eating them- black walnut divinity is so good and so is black walnut ice cream.
I’m sure this cookie recipe could be made with any other kind of nut too.  Also,  it did not yield 60 cookies for me,  more like 3 1/2 dozen

Anyway,  we think black walnut pinwheels are just delicious.

I’ve been reading this week.
I really liked this one,  it may be one of my all time favorite books.

I just started this one.  I think the kindle version is free on Amazon for a few days right now.
You may know Kate from Youtube or her blog or her other Kindle books.

Have a good weekend everyone
❤️ Rhonda

  3. I just added The Kitchen Front to my Want to Read this past week. I think I saw a recommend in the Martha Stewart Living magazine. A story with recipes is one of my favorite "genres".

  4. I could supply you all the walnuts you could use. They were so hard to get out of the shell and so little reward for all the black fingers, I just gave up on them. I grew up with pecans, so any recipe with nuts gets pecans. However, I do love black walnut ice cream!

  5. We have black walnuts around here (SE Neb) also. I don't have the time to crack them but a dear neighbor gifts me with them from time to time. I love BW ice cream. They are such a distinct flavor.

I purchased one of Kate Singh's earlier books. I read the intro and was sucked right in. :) Thank you for recommending her.

  6. We would get a dollar when I was little for a gallon of black walnut meats. They were really hard to crack, but the flavor is so good. I will definitely try that recipe.

  7. We had a black walnut tree when I was growing up. Dad would dump them on the driveway and drive the car back and froth over them to crack the hard outer shells. To a child this was the coolest thing and we were convinced they would be ruined but he grew up in that house with those walnuts and his Dad did it the same way.
