I want some advice

Good morning everyone
The last 10 months with our 5 house guests has been fun and busy.  They finalized the purchase of their brand-new just-built home yesterday and started moving in. The new home is beautiful and I will share some photos later. Right now it’s very much in transition as they move stuff from this home and from several storage buildings.

I’m guessing most all of you were in that recent cold spell over Christmas. That was a hard one, wasn’t it? Anyway we’ve known for a while that our doors and windows were kind of leaky, they are 22 years old. But during that cold spell with the hard winds, the curtains in our dining room were fluttering back and forth from the breeze coming in the closed and locked window.
So, we have started shopping for replacement windows and a replacement front and back door, there is a good company in our town and we feel very safe using them.

My biggest decision is what kind of front door to get. We can get a metal door which we can paint or they will paint whatever color we would like. Or we could get a wood door and my husband is thinking he would like a wood door.
Our home is brick, with a lot of terra-cotta in the brick and gray mortar. We have fairly new siding and it is white.
Our roof is brown and our fence is white. Shutters are white but could be painted.

We do plan to paint the hanging light fixture glossy black to match the ones we painted by the garage door.

What kind of door and what color do you think would look good with our home?  I don’t want a big glass window again.  I’m leaning toward maybe a row of windows just at the top or a solid door with no openings but I really don’t know.
Do you think a color like terra cotta, gray or blue would be good?  Or what about a wood door and what stain wood?

About 2023,  I plan to be back to blogging regularly

Thank you all
❤️ Rhonda

  1. Good morning, long time lurker here, found you by way of terris blue house journal. Had to throw my 2 cents in because of your lovely home. I have the same front door as you, except with square glass. I think o wooden door, with the row of windows that are at the top would be lovely! I’ve seen them in a lot of decorating blogs. Just my humble opinion! Happy New Year

  2. Hi Rhonda! Your home is so pretty. The only thing I would caution you about wooden doors is that they tend to swell in damp weather. We have one on our front of our house and there are days we cannot use it. I think any color you chose would be lovely. Have fun with it. It's only paint and you can always repaint if you want something different down the road. Happy New Year!

  3. I used to have a lovely, wooden door facing east. The sun was very hard on it, so it had to be refinished frequently. We replaced with a shaker style fiberglass door with three small windows at the top. Some fiberglass doors can even be stained for a wood look. I'm sure you will make a fabulous choice.

  4. You can barely tell the metal doors are not wood. If you get a metal door, you will never need another. Make sure the window in the door goes with the window above the door. When the temp was 7F, air was pouring through Tommy's kitchen window, something I have never felt before at the window. I think it is because they are aluminum. Red would be a great color, but whatever you choose will look nice.

  5. NOT WOOD. LOL I went with all glass because I want to see who is coming up to my door but they do have blinds inside the glass for when we don't want eyeballs looking at us. Terra cotta or burgundy or the color of your roof would blend in, if you want the door to pop and say "here I am " maybe a forest aka hunter green or a sunflower yellow with amber colored windows across the top

  6. Hi Rhonda :) You have a beautiful house! I think your house would be great with a colored door. Teal or dark green is what I'm envisioning there. My guide these days is that I want to drive up to my house and feel happy every time. So whatever color you would most enjoy, that's what color you should go with :)

  7. Lovely home. I like your thoughts on the wooden front door with a row of windows at the top. Since your house lights outside are black, I think the front door might be nice in black. Would look good for any seasonal wreath or decoration. But then I love black and white, so that may be why I think black with the white around your door! Blessings in the New Year. . .s

  8. Our first house had metal doors and I would go back to that in a heartbeat. It has a strong magnet seal and it is absolutely sealed tight when you close it. Our current house is all leaky wooden doors and I would like to replace everyone of them with metal.

  9. Love your home and the door you have is lovely. I like an insulated metal door - easy to paint and clean. I do like wooden doors - to many problems. Contrasting colors are a big thing it seems about everywhere. Some pretty brighter color to invite folks in.
Glad the kids are getting all settled into their new place. Happy New Year to you all!

  10. Your house is very pretty but it does sound like you need some new doors and windows if the curtains are blowing in the breeze. We replaced all our windows back in 2016. Best decision - I'd love to get a new front door but it will have to wait - its purely just for looks and a change. Gosh I can't decide for you - Wood is always nice but they can be tricky in humid areas - There are some really nice steel doors that look like wood. Plus for safety - it's harder to kick in.

  11. I would go with a good metal door in a color similar to the current door. Question though: does this door simply need new seals put on it? (they do wear out and tear). It's a beautiful door and new seals could easily save you $1k.

Winter has barely begun. Go get some plastic kits and seal up all those big windows inside for a few months. It might not look fabulous-you won't be sorry to lose the breeze. We had to do that w a slider that needs to be replaced next summer--and the plastic is bulging but the breeze stopped!

It's really hard to spend the big $ on windows and doors but you'll love the results (we've now done them all except that slider).

  12. Hi Rhonda hope you had a Merry Christmas, look forward to next year.
It seems that black and white is still a hot trend for elevations these days. A black metal door with black shutters sounds nice. Take a peek at Pinterest and homes for sale in your area to see what people have done to update their home. My house needs new windows also, but we're also thinking of moving in the next couple of years; so I'm always looking at new houses. Your house is lovely and well maintained, I know the new look and added protection of a new door & windows will be fabulous! Good luck, can't wait to see the final reveal.

  13. Your house is so pretty!

We have a similar front door to yours right now - it's a very dark stained wood with a window in the middle. Knowing what I do now, I would not get a dark stain again (TOO dark...not a fan and I think it's an outdated look) and I would not get a door with a window in the middle either. Too much sun comes in during the summer and is so hot, I have to cover the window with a towel and there's also the lack of privacy and safety.

I vote for a wood door with small windows at the top. Instead of a stain on the door, how about a beautiful color? Since your house is neutral and especially since the door is in a recessed opening, a pop of color on the front door would be beautiful. I'm thinking some sort of blue shade or yellow.
