Homemade soup and thrift store purchases

Hello everyone
I made a batch of cabbage bean soup for our lunch and it was so fast to make with already having the carrots, onions and potatoes peeled and chopped.
I like this recipe from Lena

She doesn’t blog anymore but she always was so sweet and had really helpful content.

We had some cheese and crackers with our soup

I went to 2 thrift stores this week.  I used to think our town had wonderful thrift stores.
But I’ve been in a decluttering and downsize pattern for a while now and most stuff doesn’t appeal to me anyway.

I bought these vintage magazines and 1 little jigsaw puzzle.  I think my total cost was in the $3 range.

This is the vegetable chopper I used.
I bought it from Amazon but, this model is not available any longer but there are many similar ones available.
I like it but it don’t get it out unless I’m chopping a lot of things.  The green grid thar pushes the vegs through the blades can be a little tricky to clean.

Hope you’re all having a nice weekend
❤️Rhonda

    1. My husband helps with mine sometimes too.
I am really enjoying all the ready to use veggies when I make meals

  2. It's me, Terri@BlueHouseJournal. I'm having issues signing in to certain blogs with Google.
I love Lena's Cabbage Rolls recipe...I think it's time to make some of those. I need to go through her site and collect more of her recipes. I surely do miss her blogging!

I went into the local flea market today. I came out with a Gooseberry patch cookbook. I might run in next week and pick up the other two issues of those I saw. I've got serious regrets over not grabbing them, lol. But nothing else appealed though I had a good long nose around looking for any sort of treasure.

    1. Hi Terri, I’d like to kick Google to the curb. I have 2 iPads but I can only do Google blog stuff on one of them.
I’ll look up Lena’s cabbage rolls. I’m sure we would like them. She was truly thrifty and published tasty recipes too.
About thrift shopping, I’m thinking I may just be too picky these days.

  4. I really have trouble finding anything in our second hand stores. I have heard that the employees get first crack at the donations. Means less for the rest of us.

    God bless.

    1. That makes sense. My local stores have tons of stuff for sale. Maybe I’m just too picky these days - who knows?

  5. Thanks for the veg chopper info, Rhonda. I had looked at these on amazon but a number of reviews said they were really hard to use. Don't have much strength in my hands anymore so gave it a miss.

    1. Neither Hubby or myself have much hand strength but we have that chopper and have no trouble using it.

  6. Knives are getting harder to use. I wonder how a chopper would be for my arthritic hands.

    1. I think you would need a little more strength in your arms than in your hands to use a chopper like ours. But I don’t find it difficult.

You would still need to use a knife to cut your vegs to fit on the 3 inch square.

I think you could use this kind of chopper but I’m not sure since I don’t actually know you.

  7. I have a similar food chopper. It's wonderful for chopping veggies for making relishes. Thrift stores don't seem to have much these days. I wonder if people are hanging on to their stuff just in case? Like you, I like to purchase my magazines there. Saves a bundle!

    1. Who knows? My thrift stores seem pretty packed with both stock and customers, but nothing much seemed to be things I needed.
My son lives in Indiana and he finds super things at his neighborhood thrift stores.

  8. I have the same chopper. When I clean the green grid I use a black plastic fork I got in a salad at one time. It works better than the little tool that came with the chopper and I promptly lost. Nancy in Vancouver WA

    1. That’s a good tip. I use a flat little scrapper that came with a small fridge to get the ice off the freezer walls. It works better than the brush that came with the chopper.
