Thankful for some bargains

My husband’s back is making him miserable.  He just had an MRI and we aren’t medically trained but we can see from the MRI,  he has problems.  He has an appointment with a surgeon next week .

He hurts when he sits still and he hurts when he moves around,  so to give him a distraction,  we drove about an hour to the Tinker Air Force Base to shop.
Their commissary has always had good beef.  I’m sure you all know how expensive beef is right now,  I haven’t bought any for a while and beef was the main thing on my list.

The Tinker meat department is huge- probably 100 feet or more long.
They sometimes have these discount boxes made up.  I’ve bought them before and I remember one time,  they made 2 for me,

Anyway,  they had 2 made up and I bought them both.
I trust their quality and I’ll just cook whatever is in them.

this box is all beef
this one is pork and beef
$74 seems expensive but it was heavy- so I bought it.

Inside this one was 4 rolls of ground beef,  3 packs of boneless pork, a big pork tenderloin, 2 stew meat and a small beef roast.
I added up the price stickers and these would have sold individually for $67.63—-instead of the $55 on the box price tag.
This all beef box had a large ground beef, 4 assorted roasts and 3 more packs of stew meat.
They added up to $128.51 —-a huge savings since I paid $77.

If you’re wondering if this meat was past its best date- No, not at all.  I shopped on the 12th and this roast was packed on the 11th.

When we got home,  I double- bagged some of these packages and put them straight away in the freezer.
I put the ground beef and stew meat in the fridge and I may cook some it before freezing.
I also have some chicken to repackage.

If you have elgibility and access to a military commissary,  you might want to see what you can find.
In general,  the current prices on most items are similar to civilian stores.  I mainly commissary shop for meat.  I think all the meat I browsed was lower than current store prices.

I need to get busy.  That meat needs to be dealt with.
But I won’t need to shop for meat again for months!

❤️ Rhonda

  1. I used to do all my grocery shopping at the Moffet Field commissary. You're right that their meat is very good! The closest base is now about 90 minutes away. Back then the prices were considerably lower than the stores but I guess that has changed now.

  2. Oh, those are wonderful deals!!!! I could not even get half of that here for $75. A few rolls of beef, roast and bag of chicken breast cost me $80 the other day! What a deal.

    God bless.

  4. I've purchased those boxes, and they are such a great price! I usually buy my roast from the commissary and have found the regular price on my preferred bacon is less there. Even compared to sale prices at the local grocery. Great job stocking up!

    1. I remember you posting about the meat boxes. This beef one was an especially good purchase. I’m guessing whoever packed it didn’t follow the normal guidelines or maybe they just had a lot of the beef cuts in this box and needed to push them.

  5. Please try all options before doing back surgery. I injured my back about 15 yrs ago...a bulging disc & torn cartilage. Oh my the worst pain...worse than child birth & I've done both!

Ask about physical therapy & encourage him to educate himself on how to take of & heal back pain. It can be done in many cases if you're patient & disciplined.

Also...riding around for an hour is one of the worst things you can do when you're already in pain. You need to ice/heat, rest, lay for down alot but get up & take short walks. It takes a great deal of patience. And no lifting...lift nothing heavier than a coffee cup. Even once the pain subsides you must be strict with the rules to give it time to heal. I do hope he can get relief because it is a miserable way to live.

    1. thank you for the advice. We rarely drive around but our car is very comfortable and has built in seat heaters that did help his back that day.

    2. It doesn't really matter if the seat is comfortable. The pressure that gravity puts on your spine when you're sitting upright can cause more damage to an injury.
I do hope he gets some relief.

  6. Hello there ! Long time reader first time commenter. I’m from New Zealand but my son and his family live in Minnesota . We were there at Christmas and I was completely astounded by the price of beef. A 2 lb piece of tenderloin that would cost US$ 30 in NZ was $125. I could not believe the price of beef. And we think food is expensive in NZ. I can understand tariffs making imported food expensive but the beef must surely come from the US. Anyway these look like great deals. Very sorry about your husband’s back pain, that can very wearying to live with. Hope the upcoming appointment gives you some options to resolve it.

    1. Yes U.S. groceries are expensive and beef is especially high. You are right that most beef sold in the US is US grown. Fancy cuts of beef seemed to be especially high around Christmas. Thankfully very nice spiral hams could be purchased for $1-$2 a pound during the holidays. Politics about green policies have had some affect on beef producers, drought and fires have had bad affects on beef producers.
This is a weird economy. People talk about it being terrible, but all the restaurants I see seem to very busy, even though eating out costs a lot more than it did pre-covid.
Stores seem busy. I see mostly newer expensive vehicles when we are driving around. The gas stations are always busy.
Fast food places have full parking lots and drive throughs.
The stock market seems to be thriving.
I know it’s really hard for low income people, but there is so much help available for low income people- It doesn’t seem to me that being poor now is the same as it used to be.
I don’t know what’s going on or what is going to happen.
we are watching our spending as our income does not stretch as far as it did pre-covid.
      The whole economy is weird🤷🏻‍♀️

    2. My stepdaughters live in Scotland and my other son in London so we see food prices everywhere ! I think the US prices are high and it must be hard on a fixed income. The world is definitely a strange place right now

  8. The closest Commissary to me is 3 hours away, so I don't get there very often at all. I miss it, especially for meat. Other prices are comparable to Walmart pricing, but meat was always a good price. Not worth the gas to drive there though. Sometimes if I go visit my son, who is 4 hours away, I'll go to the base by his house and shop and pack a cooler for the trip home. :)
