Postage stamp projects

Lana is an online friend in TN and she asked how my postage stamp projects were coming along, well, I thought I had already blogged them but guess I never did. So, here they are......
Sometimes if I think about doing something, then in my mind I start thinking I really did it or it really happened, even though I only just thought it, anyone else do that?
Back in the summer I cut out lots of 2 inch squares from assorted fabric I already had.

Once I started sewing, I made these 5 pillows for Christmas gifts.
I also made 6 pillows for our home.

all the pillows are made like a sham with an envelope back so the patchwork cover can be taken off and laundered.

I made one sofa-sized quilt for a gift.

even after making all those projects, I still have postage stamps to sew up for more pillows and quilts!

  6. Hey Rhonda! Thankx for posting the completed projects. LOVE the quilt. Did you tie or quilt it? The pillows are cute too.

I love TN, and have been there often to see relatives in my younger days but I am a Southern IL girl all of my 48 1/2 years! Thats okay I have trouble with my online friends, trying to tell my hubby or whoever about them.

Keep sharing those crafts, I LOVE to see what people make. Have you started any baby stuff yet? Won't be long for you!!!

I am still determined to make one of the rugs you had on your old blog. I just need more hours of evening time!

  9. It is great seeing your postage stamp projects again. I did see them since you emailed photos to me. I just love anything made with postage stamps and they are great fun to make too! Some very lucky person got that quilt! I should make some pillows for my couch since I love using my small postage stamp quilt draped over the back.

Are you working on any special quilts right now? Perhaps a baby quilt?

    Hugs from Holland ~

  14. I'm a big fan of postage stamp quilts. Following your example, I'm going to start going through the bunches of scraps I have to compile candidates for a scrappy quilt. Since I'm so compulsive, I'll probably sort them into compatible color groups. I'm thinking of a triple Irish chain design, with a-white-on-white background.
At an auction early last year, I bought a wonderful postage stamp quilt that caught my eye. It has a white background and hundreds of little patches that finished to 3/4 of an inch each. When I had a chance to examine it more closely, I realized that it was all hand done! Can you imagine? It only had a couple of age spots on it, so it was well kept.
Luckily, I was able to talk with the former owner of the quilt whose belongings were being auctioned. She told me that her great aunt had made her that quilt sometime in the 1930s. She gave me her great aunt's full name and her full name, and included both their maiden names. So I have the full provenance (history of ownership) of othe quilt, which is just amazing.
I took it to a wonderful quilt appraiser who valued the quilt at almost seven times what I paid for it. She strongly urged me not to wash it since it was in such good condition and had no bad odor. The age spots serve to help date the quilt and prove its age, as does the variety of fabrics used in it.
She asked if I intended to sell it. I'd thought about it, but I really like it. So for now it'll reside in my little collection of vintage quilts.
One reason I'm sharing this info, Rhonda, is that you might want to get your postage stamp quilt appraised. The postage stamp design is much sought after, and yours is very nicely done.
Every quilt collector I've spoken with urges that new quilts be appraised because their provenance can be recorded and replacement cost estimated. That can be a real blessings if you or your heirs decide at some point to sell any of the quilts you've made.
So many quilters think of their work as simply a useful item, but there's much, much value in the quilts we produce when they're made of good design, fabric and workmanship. :-)
