what kind of tree do we have?
This tree and flower bed is in our front yard. I planted the jonquil and tulip bulbs in the fall and am glad they survived our unusually cold winter. There are also iris bulbs that will bloom soon and 3 hydrangea bushes with lots of green leaves.
This tree has red leaves and is blooming with little pink flowers. It is really pretty and I have not seen one anywhere else in my neighborhood or town.
We did not plant it, it was planted by the first family that lived in this house, around 2000.
I hope someone out there knows what kind of tree this is.
I would really like to know its name.
Thank you all for your help. You left so many helpful comments, and after reading them and doing some intenet research, I am pretty sure that my tree is a
flowering plum tree - even though it does not ever have fruit.

Yes, please answer. I want one at my house, but I don't know what kind to buy. :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom had this tree in our side yard growing up and then years later I bought one ...I believe it is called a flowering plum. I bought mine about 15 yrs ago, so I hesitated on the name. I googled it and I believe it is accurate.

When I was a kid our neighbor had a row of these across the front of her house. They were always so pretty in Spring. She called them flowering plums also. Really pretty garden spot you have.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a plum tree we had in our yard in Arkansas.
How are you my friend? I put a box in the mail to you today.

Hi Rhonda! My dad was a wholesale tree farmer in OKC for years & years. He said it is actually really tricky to identify trees by photographs but it looks most like a Purple Plum. It could also be a Crabapple but there are SO MANY varieties: Thunderchild, Royalty, Prairie Fire are possibilities.
ReplyDeleteHe wonders, do the leaves stay red? Does the tree bear any fruit?
We had a tree like that in our yard. It was a plum tree. Looks exactly the same as ours.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring!
Beautiful tree & tulips! I love the spring when everything is blooming & leafing out!!

I agree with Flowering Plum because I planted one 3 years ago and that's what the tag said and it looks like this one.

I found your blog by way of a comment you made on Jerri's at Amazing Grace. Of course when I saw the words 'Rhonda in OK' I had to come right over for a visit. Your blog is great and I love the old photos, especially the one of your grandmother's family in front of their Bartlesville Parsonage Home. Bartlesville is my hometown.
ReplyDeleteI missed that you changed your blog!
ReplyDeleteI was chatting with Nina the other day and told her you hadn't updated in ages, and she said you changed it. I love reading your posts and have missed it, glad to have it back! :)
I can't help you with the ID of the tree, but it sure is beautiful. I hope you find your answer..........

Purple leaf plum was the first thing that popped in my head! You could google that and see if it looks like it. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say plum tree too because it looks very much like the one that we have in our front yard. Our tree bears small, hard plums. Does yours have fruit on it?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, happy belated anniversary. Your pearl necklace is lovely.
Yes, I have to agree. It looks like a flowering plum to me as well. Gorgeous tree for foliage and spring blooms.
