Update on the egg shell plants

These were planted about two weeks ago. One side is all cherry tomatos and I mostly only planted one seed in each cup - I don't like thinning out baby plants. 10 of them have sprouts.
The other side is assorted flowers and they sprouted about the same.

I have an assortment of saved seeds, I am going to replant the unsprouted cups and hope for more plants.

The reason for no blog posts this week - I have another cold! I've lost count, this is either #6 or #7 of this school year. I am eating right, drinking Emergen-C every day, washing my hands- etc. I don't know what else to do ( not seeing my germ spreading grandchildren is not an option I would choose at this point)
This current cold is milder and seems to be shorter than any of the others so I am thankful for that.

I am listening if anyone has advice

  1. No advice, but pretty soon you'll have developed immunity to quite a few of the cold viruses...they won't be able to affect you any more :-)

  2. Sorry you have another cold! No advice here, sounds like you're doing all you can.

Are you planting these directly into the ground or into bigger pots and then planting into the ground?

    1. I will probably plant the tomatoes in the big pots that used to be tree pots once I refresh that soil with compost.
The flowers will probably get planted in the ground in the front yard flower beds.

  3. Seedlings look lovely! I can't remember-- did you put them on a heat mat? This is teh first year I've used one and it made HUGE difference.

Sorry 'bout the cold. How about a cup of hot tea with honey? Use a warm mist humidifier? (Dry nasal passages don't do the job of "screening out" viruses.) That's all I have.

  4. Have you tried garlic, in pill form? I have taken it for about six years now and I don't get colds anymore. I take one each day and when I feel something coming on I take one morning and night. For me it's been a miracle "drug." Your little sprouts look so hopeful! I love that spring can't be far away.

  5. VICKS....I swear by it!!!!!!!!! Because of my asthma there is not a lot I can take. It sounds odd (but then I don't claim to be normal), I put a little Vicks under my nose whenever the menfolk get sick. This cold I have now is thanks to The Dude not saying anything until he was dying! LOL. When I asked how long he had been feeling poorly he stated a few days. I would have been applying Vicks otherwise. I do agree with Rozy that the garlic is great. I use it from time to time. This is my first cold in three years.

I must have missed the first post on your egg plantings. Great idea. I am trying to grow more celery using the 'end of the celery in water' trick. Looking good, but time will time. Maybe I will post about it.

    1. I have some Vicks and will try it. I did try using VIcks as a night time hand cream but it didn't seem to help my hands much.
I will try the dab under my nose, it sounds like an appetite suppresant too :)

yes, please post about your celery growing

  6. Ugh, I hope you feel better very soon. I noticed that after we started taking probiotics (the real stuff, not the ones you get from Walmart), my kiddos are sick much less. In fact, we've lasted for almost 2 months without any sickies :)

    1. we are taking Probiotics, husband is taking Pearls and I am taking ProBio5 from Plexus. We like that they help our insides, hopefully they will start on the cold prevention too

  7. Those are so cute. I even like the metal tray they are resting on!

I hope you feel better soon! Our doctor said we should be taking 2000 mgs of Vit. D3 daily in addition to the Vit. C. It's an immune booster. Might be worth a try for you. We have been incredibly healthy this winter, so maybe it really does work.

    1. that metal tray is from a thrift, it has Christmas country geese under the egg cartons, you still like it? I planned to redo but never have it.

I am going to get VitD3 2000 today!

  8. Rhonda: My family has good results taking Cold-EEZE lozenges. If you are already ill, it seems to make you feel better faster, but if you can take them as soon as you feel just a little off, it seems to ward off the full-blown attack. I purchased the inexpensive Equate (Walmart) brand recently, and they are every bit as effective. Hope you feel better soon.

Your plants are coming along, aren't they? My son does some container gardening and I told him this idea. Keep us posted!

  9. I used to think I had a cold all winter and then I went to an environmental allergist. It could be dust and mold in your home. The biggest thing they suggested was keeping the bedroom very dust free. Wash all bedding in hot water and dry in the dryer. Mattresses and pillows should be encased against dust mites. Also if your pillow is more that a year old I would replace it. A 2 yr old pillow is 50% dust mite dander inside and that is highly allergenic. We replace our pillows about every nine months. Be sure to replace furnace filters often. If you feel there is a sinus infection that is hanging on you might try taking the herb artemesia. It will knock out a sinus infection in 3-4 days. I hope you feel better soon.

    1. Hi Momma-lana, I have heard this but I don't think it is our cause. Our mattresses are new, always covered and the covers all get laundered often in hot water. I wash our pillows too and change the filters often to.
      Thank you though.

herb artemesia is new to me, I will look into it.

  10. the minute I feel a cold coming on I take Jamieson Zinc Lozenges ( you suck on them; not chew them); also I take 2 odorless garlic capsules daily. My mom who is in a senior lodge takes 2 odorless garlic and she has avoided getting the cold that everyone else in there has.. she is almost 94 and this has worked for her for years.
