use what you have – Apple butter in a slow cooker
Hello everyone
there were several containers of applesauce in our pantry, most were freebies from Kroger and they were all getting close to their used by date
my daughter recently made pear butter. And I've watched several YouTube videos recently of people, canning jelly and jam.
So I decided to try turning that plain applesauce into apple butter.
I looked up a few recipes. I didn't follow any of them exactly but I will put my recipe that I used below and it turned out Delicious!
We like a lot of cinnamon, so mine does have a good bit of that.
And it is not canned to American food safety standards.
I put the hot apple butter straight from the slow cooker into recycled jars and put the lids on them.
Then, when they cooled, they went in the fridge.
I'm sure it could be water baths and official canning jars and kept in the pantry, but I'm not giving advice on how to do that because I don't know.
for this batch of apple butter, I used
About 8 cups of unsweetened applesauce
3/4 cup of sugar
3/4 cup of brown sugar
Heaping tablespoon of cinnamon
Half a teaspoon of allspice
And a few pinches of salt
I let it cook in a slow cooker for about five hours.
I started every hour or so and stopped when it was thicker
Then it went right into jars with lids
And into the fridge when it cooled.

That looks good! I personally enjoy canning in a water bath canner. I do high acid foods jams jellies etc. I find it relaxing and it's great to give as gifts. Katie
ReplyDeleteYum! Apple butter is so delicious!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a Fall flavor! Homemade always seems to have more flavor.
ReplyDeleteI water bath things like jellies, jams, pickles and the pear butter I made this year in jars with lug lids (similar to what you used) and they process and seal just fine. Yes I know I am in America and not canning to standards, but I figure people were canning way before those standards were ever thought of .
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteRhonda,
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!!! I think I will copy you, if you don't mind!! I have been thinking of making some apple butter. I love it so much on fresh piece of bread. I have some apples and applesauce!! I may get the slow cooker out and get it going. :)
Your apple butter looks wonderful. I think I have some apple sauce that needs using up.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Hi again! I wound up making apple butter because of your post. I just made 4 half pints. I decided to do like you did and put them in the fridge! They are delicious! Thank you for the idea!- Katie
ReplyDeleteSmart move! I used to buy a big can of applesauce and use it as the base for apple butter. I've not done it for awhile. I am saving money to get my stove top replace. It had an electrical issue and had to be disconnected. I'm really hoping to do it before Christmas! If I do, I may make some this year.
