Day 2 of kitchen ship-shape

I spent a lot of my free time yesterday and today working in the kitchen.  I think I've got rid of all th trash as well as 3 sacks and 2 boxes full of stuff to be donated .......

And these currently unused dishes were stored in hard to reach spots so I packed them up and they will go to my husband's backyard work building.  Instead of using tape to label the tubs (tape might fall off after a few years) I wrote the tub contents on sheets of paper and put them inside the  clear tubs.  Those should stay in place 👍

That's about the extent of my progress.  There is cleaning to still be done and a bit more organizing.
Now, my cabinets are nothing like a game of Jenga.  Everything is easy to see and take out or put back.

I heard on the radio that for the first time, more homes with 3 car garages are being built than 1 bedroom apartments.  They said it was because more multi-generational families are living together and that's why we have bigger homes.

Nope, I don't think that's why.  I think people want bigger homes because they have so much stuff! 😂
What do you think?

  1. I'm a bit like you and need to reorganise my cupboards for everything to fit in properly. I am going to have to rethink a few bits a pieces and where I have things stored. I also need to get the steam cleaner out and make sure all the shelves have a proper clean off. I guess instead of thinking about this I might just have to get up and do something about it.

  2. I love your idea about putting the paper inside the tub to label things. Brilliant idea!
I am not sure about the bigger houses, but I am ready to downsize. We have way too much house for us now.

  4. The paper label inside the containers is genius!

Jenga made me laugh. I just purchased that game for one of my grandchildren. That is a perfect word to describe my cupboards too.

Good job on all of the decluttering.

  5. Ha! Jenga describes my cupboards too! That's a great idea about putting the paper inside the tubs. We've been decluttering for several years but the stuff keeps coming back!

  6. I'm with you about bigger homes b/c of Stuff. Crazy, b/c it seems like after a few years (less than five, usually), those homes are up for sale. People reach for too much, too fast, I think.

Purging is great, I did some of my own when we moved back at the end of summer. Bare necessities, but we're doing fine.

  7. I agree it is because people have more stuff. I never realized just how much I had until we started moving it all. We went with drawer in most of the kitchen to make things easier to store and easier to access.

  8. I agree. I don't know hardly anyone that can actually pull their car into their garage!

  9. Good going on organizing and de-cluttering.
I am working on that as well.
    Oh what a job.
    God bless.

  10. I agree that people want bigger homes because they have more stuff. Also because many have issues with wanting to be the Jones that everyone is trying to keep up with. :) Keeping clutter down is a constant battle for me. When I start getting that urge for a larger home I know that it is usually because I have too much stuff. Our home is just fine for the three of us! Espcially if I keep our possessions in check. It feel good to lighten the load and get organized!

  11. My kitchen has never reached the Jenga point, lol, but I won't scoldbecause my craft room is an obstacle course!!

As for larger homes, we bought our house with our future in mind. My mom did live with us. Our main floor is perfect at 1300 sf. But the thing with KS is that you must have a basement....which is also 1300 sf. We use only a small corner of it for summer evenings as it's gloriously cool down there. The rest is storage and empty. On the bright side, we have a 3 car garage and two cars are parked inside and the third is a workshop.

  12. I'm also going to rat out my best friend and tell you all that she always complains that her house has no storage...but it's 3000sf, 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a 3 car garage. 2 people and no space to park in the garage. Every time she mentions the storage space, I suggest a ginormous dumpster!!! She tells me I don't understand lol. I tell her I can't!

  13. Yep. Too much stuff.
    I agree!
    Love that feeling of purging...
    And organizing...
    Have a great weekend!

  14. Hi Rhonda, I try to go through the kitchen cabinets once a month as things just get put other places. After years of dealing with those crazy lids to plastic containers the light bulb finally lit up and I put all the ones that fit into a fabric tote. Goodness did I feel dumb. Anyway after the last go around I told The Dude there was nothing to get rid of...shocking. He was very happy. He is soooo tired of my decluttering as he fears it has become an illness, lol.

As far as the bigger houses I think it is both. The Calm One and I did live with my mom and step-dad for several years after my divorce and one brother has always lived with them. That made it fours vehicles and only a two car garage...if you did not put any boxed stuff in the garage, lol. And I do know that many homes around our neighborhood have their older children living with them. We do live in an older neighborhood with older folks so maybe the kids are there to help their parents...not real sure and do not want to ask.

    blessings, jilly
