Menus and turtles

On this week’s to do list was inventory the frozen food and make a June menu.
First I hand wrote the inventory as I counted things in the freezer.  But that was messy so I printed it out and then I put it pretty paper because I have a bunch of paper.

Meals for June were planned minimally.  If I decide later to cook a new recipe, I can, but for now, I’ve planned either familiar recipes or meals that don’t need recipes.

There are turtles everywhere in Oklahoma right now .
Below is the second big turtle we’ve seen in our backyard this week, and it’s only Tuesday.
This guy was muddy, and mossy, and had an injury to his rear right  shell.
He hissed when my husband picked him up
And he’s been moved to field where he won’t drive our dog crazy or eat our strawberries.
I don’t think our dog would hurt him but there would be no peace if both Mr. Turtle and Ducky were in our yard at the same time.

  1. I like that your meals are choices - not mandated to be certain days. That is a great way to do it.
Thanks for saving the poor turtle. Poor baby!

    1. Trying to decide what to eat and specify the day has never worked for us. But a flexible plan does.

    1. I know. I think he’s had a rough life already but he’s pretty big so I’m assuming he strong and tough.

  3. I should have waited until I did a freezer count before planning my menu for the week. I am only on day 2 of the week and have already changed everything.

    1. Some of them bite but I don’t know how to tell which. I don’t pick them up. That’s what husbands are for :)

  5. You are so organized with your meal planning! Turtles are out here in IL now, too. I remember my husband pulling over to the side of the road a few years ago to rescue a turtle in the middle of the road and move it safely to the field on the other side before it got run over. I'm afraid of turtles, especially those big ones. They can bite!

    1. Yes snapping turtles can sure bite.
My husband didn’t even flinch when the turtle hissed, I guess that’s his Boy Scout and Marine training in action.

Thank you for the compliment. I think I’m kind of loosely organized

  6. Have you eaten turtle before. Snapping turtle? It is good. Looks like a snapping turtle.

    1. I’ve never eaten turtle and I’ll just take your word for it. I’m not crazy about meat and I’m really not fond of any of the game animals I’ve tried. 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

    2. PS - my husband says it was a box turtle, not a snapping turtle. But I’m not eating any of them

  7. A couple of wees ago, the Redneck went out to do the evening feeding. Suddenly he's back at the front window, yelling for me to get out there. I went to see what was wrong, and he's looking at the dog yard, and asking if I forgot to tell him about my 'pet'. I'm looking, but I don't see anything, until I notice that between the fence and a blue tote I had put on the patio there is a turtle shell on it's side, and the turtle is clawing around trying to get unstuck. It was a snapper, about the size of a serving platter. We figured that with all the rain we have had, the creek down the road had risen enough that he just came up through the pastures and wandered on to our property. Yet we can't figure out how he got into the dog yard. The Redneck got a big shovel and took him out of the yard, and he scrambled away, never to be seen again. {{SIGH}} It seems that all kinds of critters find their way into my yard--turtles, skunks, a feral mama cat who had four kittens around my back porch, other stray cats, and this morning I found a young white male pit bull hiding in my hauling off pile. I think I'm the 'cool mom' in the neighborhood, and everyone wants to hang out here!

  8. Turtle meat is delicious. I've only had it once, many, many years ago.
I really need to inventory the freezers. I think I'm doing a freezer challenge for the rest of the month.

  9. I think that is the biggest turtle that I have ever seen.
