June Sewing - so far

This month’s sewing so far-
I made a top for myself with a pattern by LoveNotions.com

I finished off all the edges with single fold bias tape and I like how it looks.

I also sewed an apron but it was such a complicated pattern and I don’t like how it turned out so I’m not showing it.   I disliked both sewing it and the finished apron so I threw that pattern away.  I kept the apron and may wear it, but I doubt it.

Granddaughter Elizabeth has Girl Scout day camp this month and the leader chose these stools for all the campers.

My only part of the process was to sew the seats.  The leader bought this outdoor fabric at Joann.  She picked it because it was 90% off.

I don’t think I’ve ever sewn with outdoor fabric but it was very nice.  It’s sturdy but not bulky.
When I finished sewing the very last one,  I took it off the machine along with the 4 inches of thread left on my bobbin- that was great! It’s no fun when the bobbin runs out before a job is finished.

This reminded me of my Brownie and Girl Scout days.  We did outdoor camp at a lake not far from our town.  We didn’t have stools but made SitUpOns with woven newspaper strips.

I found a tutorial on Pinterest for retro Girl Scout Sit Up Ons and may try making them with my grandchildren.

  1. Love the polka dots! I make all my porch pillow covers in the outdoor fabric and they last forever!

  2. Darling blouse!
Here sits an old Brownie and Girl Scout. I have very fond memories of when I was involved in this part of my world.

  3. I like the stool and directions. Why didn't you donate the pattern instead of throwing it away? People have different tastes and sewing skills.

    1. I usually donate things but this pattern was truly awful. I’ve been sewing nearly 50 years and thus silly apron took me 8 hours to complete. I don’t think anyone wants to spend 8 hours sewing a poorly designed apron with poorly written instructions.

  5. The stools are great! I remember using the sit up ones when I was in scouts.

  6. Girl scout camp! We also had sit-upons, and we made a bag using two dishclothes with a shoestring to put our dirty dishes in. Then you were supposed to dunk the bag with the dirty dishes in the water to wash them. LOL. Can't say I remember that working great, but I remember the bag. I loved Girl Scout day camp - my sister and went every summer for several years. The park was just a few blocks from our house.
I can't wait to show you the little aprons my sister made for Layla. I had the pattern and fabrics and sent them home with her when she was here in April. She sent the aprons last week. Layla was gone for the week, and we didn't have time yesterday, but I'll give them to her this afternoon. I let my sister keep the pattern (I bought it - Simplicity, I think). She's going to make some adult sized aprons for herself and her daughter.

  7. I remember sit upons at campfire camp what a good memory. Love the blouse and I agree with throwing away a dumb pattern who wants to have someone else mess with a poor design. You did the world a favor.

    1. Thank you for saying that about the pattern. I’m sure you’ve dealt with crazy patterns too. 🤪

  9. Rhonda, I really like the blouse! I had to chuckle when I read about your apron making experience, I've had projects that I completed and felt the same way about!

  10. I got some sewing done lately as well. I don’t like bad patterns either. It ruins all the fun!

  11. Great projects! I remember making sit-upons in girl scouts. Now I could sit-upon, but not get up upon after!

I've not written much since my husband has not yet been able to get my old computer to connect with the new internet. Soon I hope. I'm borrowing hubby's while he takes a well-deserved nap.
