Shopping in a bigger city and cooking afterward

Hello everyone,
I woke up yesterday with a very mild cold.  I’ve been told there is a mild, short lasting cold going around our town and I hope that is what I have.  My husband woke up with it today.  But it truly is mild and I don’t feel great but I’m still getting things done.
My husband had a routine appointment at the VA Friday morning and I went with him.  Except I mostly sat in the van and stitched.  That hospital is huge and very busy and I don’t go in unless I just have to.

Then we drove over to Midwest City.  My daughter needed powdered sugar and couldn’t get in in our town.  She also wanted butter and I had read about a butter sale.  So our first shopping stop was at Crest,  a discount food seller in the OKC area.     https://www.crestfoodsok.com/

I found plenty of powdered sugar and plenty of the butter that is on sale for………$1.25 a pound!
This is a big store and they had cases and cases of butter.  So no,  I did not buy more than I should.  The cashier didn’t even blink when I told them there were 42 pounds..
My daughter makes and sells ready to bake cinnamon rolls and she usually does them for holiday weekends.  She was thrilled to get so much low cost butter (so she will make more profit) and to find powdered sugar.
Have y’all heard about a sugar shortage?

Then we went to the Air Force base and shopped a little there.
I found Cora’s birthday presents at the Exchange - children’s clothes are nicely priced there and the price of these Bonnie Jean dresses is $20,  which is the same price I paid years ago  when I bought frilly dresses for Cora’s much older cousins, when they were little bitty girls.

Then I went to the commissary.  I had a very short list and found most of them.
The best deals at the commissary are on fresh meat.
I bought 4 big packs of marked down ground beef that needed to be dealt with today and a tray of chicken breasts.
I don’t buy meat anywhere else but I think $2.23 is a really low price for 80% ground beef.
The chicken breasts were $2.09 a pound

I pot the chicken in a crock pot with water and seasonings,   then cooked it until tender and shredded it.

Now the chicken is in meal size containers in the freezer,  waiting to be made into chicken salad, chicken pot pie, etc.

Half of the ground beef was browned and drained very well and seasoned with diced onions
Then I froze it  in 1 cup portions to make shepherds pie, goulash, etc
1 put 1 pound in 3 bags
Also made seasoned hamburger patties, quick froze them individually and then bagged them for hamburgers at home.

I saw another blogger write about investment cooking and I guess that’s what I did.
There are lots of fast home cooked meals in our future and the messy part is already done.

If you have military eligibility,  I find shopping on base to be a great benefit.
And if you live in the OKC area,  Crest is a great store to shop from,

Hope you all are having a good weekend and I hope you all are cold free 🤒 😷

  1. I don't bake, and have not shopped for powdered sugar, but those are fantastic prices and for the meat also. i do some investment cooking, too. Right now, there is food cooked for meals and for freezing. I was too tired to freeze it last night, so the freezing will be later.

    1. I was not expecting to ever see butter at that price again. I’m happy it was on sale when we could go to that store

  3. That was a huge amount of cooking! Congratulations! And the price on butter was a price I haven’t seen in years! I think I have 12-14 pounds of butter in my freezer, about a years worth, because I bought it on sale. I can’t imagine paying $5 a pound now. I need to bake a meatloaf or two and get portions frozen! Thanks for getting me motivated. Hilogene in Az

  4. Amazing price on that butter, Rhonda! Butter around here is around $4.50/lb.. Actually those were amazing prices on everything. Stocking up on food items while the prices are low, is better than putting the money in the bank. As the saying goes, it's insurance that you can eat if the times get bad.

    1. I looked online and Walmart butter is $4.48, name brands are about $2 higher.
I’m thrilled with our bargain purchases.

  5. I can't get my head around what's going on. Why are eggs 12 dollars a dozen in NJ where my sister lives.
While I am getting eggs for 3 dollars a dozen in Florida.
Why is butter 1.25 there and 6 dollars here. Why is there abundant sugar here and none there.
Does anyone have what's causing this?
You got incredible prices on the meat!

    1. I have no answer for you except the economy, inflation, job problems, supply issues are just crazy. It sure keeps us on our toes, doesn’t it?

  6. I am with Savannah. Things are just not adding up. Lidl here had butter for 2.19 on Friday but I am not seeing any sugar shortages. Eggs just keep going up here like there is no end to the price hikes. Everything has jumped in price again and I had to tell Hubby no more Oreos because they are just ut of our budget now. Life will go on but I wonder how much more we can absorb.

    1. I don’t normally buy Oreos but when I was browsing in a grocery store recently, I was shocked to see them almost $6.
I have no idea how this inflation can continue

  7. I am sorry to hear that you and your hubby have colds. I hope they stay mild!

That is an unbelievable price on butter - lucky you!

I have not heard of a sugar shortage here in IL.

I always admire how organized and prepared you are with prepping and cooking things ahead of time for future meals. I buy most of my meat at Aldi because I buy organic ground beef and chicken. However, I realize I'm only cooking for the two of us. If we still had kids at home, we probably couldn't afford to eat this way.

    1. I haven’t heard of a sugar shortage either but maybe it was just a local issue. Who knows? Supply issues have just become a way of life I guess.

I bought a bag of split peas and will be trying some split pea soup soon, after your recommendation.

  9. I haven't heard of a sugar shortage here in Canada yet, but I do know the farms here that grow sugar beets did not have as good a crop as usual. Great deal on that butter.

    God bless.

    1. That might account for it, who knows? I’m thinking my daughter’s shortage might of just been a temporary local issue. These shortages and supply chain issues are just no fun, are they?

  11. Oh wow! I don't have a lot of freezer space but I will definitely stop by Crest on my way home from work today to see if they still have butter. A couple of weeks ago, they had Eggland's Best eggs $5.99 for a 24 pack, which was a great deal.

    1. Hi Karla, you might the Consumer Queen Crest Facebook group. It’s not a high volume list, mostly photos inside the stores, which store and prices.
I’m reading the Edmond store has butter for $1.99 on Monday but not the other Crests. Some OKC Winco’s have butter for .99!

  12. Like everyone else, I'm astounded by the price on the butter you got. That was a sweet deal.
I like to keep cooked chicken and cooked ground beef in my freezer as well.
I LOVE Cora's dresses! Layla has some strong opinions about her clothes now, and they are not the same as Grammy's, so I don't buy anything without her anymore. Lol.

    1. Hi Tammy- Cora has strong ideas about lots of things but I know she will like these dresses. And her February birthday is the right time to shop for the new spring dresses. I think these will be perfect for church.
I love having precooked meat in the freezer, makes meal prep really quick.
We are really thankful to of read about the butter sale and that it coincided with a trip to OKC when we were already going.
