BEDA #4 Thrifty Thursday - dishwasher tips

Hello everyone

With 7 people in our home, our dishwasher normally runs at least 2 full loads daily.
My favorite and cheapest dishwasher detergent is the Great Value powder one.  It gets all the tea and coffee stains off of white mugs and leaves everything squeaky clean.  I fill the soap cup just half full too.
My dishwasher requires a rinse agent.  Without it, the dishes are so wet after any cycle.  I’ve tried vinegar but it didn’t help at all and generic rinse agent didn’t help either.
Name brand rinse agents are in small 8 ounce bottles and are about  $5 at my stores.  Then I found the huge 32 ounce bottle on Amazon for about $10.  I’ll keep buying it from Amazon if this price continues.

I’ve discovered my dishwasher does an excellent job of cleaning everything on the speed cycle.  It’s about 60 minutes and the other cycles are 2 - 21/2 hours.  It’s kind of tricky to set the speed cycle though.  So to remind me and the others in our home,  I marked the buttons with the order to push them to run the dishwasher on the speed cycle.
That part of the dishwasher only shows when the door is open.  So there aren’t any sharpie marks causing an eyesore in my kitchen.

Thank you everyone who answered about the mystery gadget.  I’m pretty sure it is a no touch door opener.
I had no idea.

  1. I have planned to use the short cycle when I can remember. I will get the rinse aid from Amazon as it is the one I use. Marking the cycles is a good idea. Tommy will never go near the dishwasher...lol...but, I can barely see the words. So, that would help.

  3. I have been lucky enough to find the large bottles at Walmart and now our
Co-op is carrying them as well. I am lucky and only have to do dishes every second day when it is just Harvey and I. Add any of the sons in and I end up doing them every day.

    God bless.

  4. I use the short cycle too and it works great. Seems like powder like you have works better than the tabs at getting things clean for us. Daughter loves the tabs though.

  5. The information on the dishwasher is excellent! I have this exact dishwasher (new to me) and wondered why my dishes were so wet! Love to know about the speed cycle! Thank you so much!

  6. My dishwasher has a 1 hr cycle and that's what we use all the time. Like you said, I don't notice any difference in how clean the dishes get from that cycle versus a longer one. I don't use a rinse agent and yes, my dishes are wet after the 1 hr cycle, but I just open the dishwasher door, pull the racks out, and let the dishes air dry for a bit before I put them away. I once read somewhere where they said after washing, you can put a dishtowel over the door where part of it is hanging inside, then close the door as much as possible. The dishtowel will supposedly absorb water from the dishes. I tried that and didn't think it worked as well as air drying.
